Yaesu FT-8100R CAP/MARS Modification

By: W8CWE

The following instructions outline the simple procedure for modifying the Yaesu FT-8100R Dual-band mobile radio for CAP/MARS operation. This procedure is fairly simple yet requires the removal of an SMD device. If you are not familiar with these devices, you should leave this modification to qualified service personnel. This modification expands the FT-8100R to 137-174 MHz and 410-480 MHz respectively. You must be authorized to use any out of band frequencies. The author assumes no responsibility for any damage incurred as a result of performing this modification.

    1.    Disconnect the power and antenna leads.

    2.    Place the radio on a flat, well lit work surface.

    3.    Remove the screws from the speaker cover. There are six screws total.

    4.    Locate and remove the SMD resistor shown in the pictures below. See Note below.

    5.    Reinstall the speaker cover using the six screws removed earlier.

NOTE: Remove the solder from one side of the SMD resistor and carefully pry this end up. This will allow you to easily return the radio to factory specification later. You must reset the radio microprocessor for the change to take effect.
Refer to the FT-8100R Owner's Guide for details on the microprocessor reset procedure.
